Substance

Definition

That which exists independently and serves as the underlying reality in which properties inhere.

Explanation

Aristotle defined substance as that which is neither predicable of a subject nor present in a subject. For him, individual things like 'this particular horse' are primary substances. Descartes later distinguished between thinking substance (mind) and extended substance (matter). Spinoza radically argued that there is only one substance: God or Nature.
