Social Contract

Definition

The theory that political authority derives from an agreement among individuals to form a society and government.

Explanation

Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau each developed different versions. For Hobbes, we trade freedom for security under an absolute sovereign. Locke saw the contract as protecting natural rights, with revolution justified if government fails. Rousseau emphasized the general will and direct democracy.
