Utilitarianism

Definition

The ethical theory that the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number.

Explanation

Founded by Jeremy Bentham and refined by John Stuart Mill, utilitarianism judges actions by their consequences. Mill distinguished between higher and lower pleasures, arguing that intellectual pleasures are superior to bodily ones. Modern versions include preference utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism.
